Composer Kira Fontana received her BM in Composition from the Eastman School of Music, and her MM from the Yale School of Music on a full scholarship. Influenced by her main musical mentors, legendary minimalist composers Steve Reich and John Adams, Fontana writes riveting original music for film that forges new ground while powerfully realizing the director's vision. Her award-winning compositions have been performed and recorded by some of the top classical musicians in the world, including members of New York's acclaimed contemporary ensembles Alarm Will Sound and So Percussion. Fontana's private teachers include Pulitzer Prize winners David Lang (Oscar-nominated), Steven Stucky, and Christopher Rouse, as well as Charles Ives Living Award winner Martin Bresnick. Based in Los Angeles, Fontana is also an accomplished singer-songwriter.
In 2015, Fontana composed the film score for KEDi, a documentary feature directed by Ceyda Torun (Official Selection: Full Frame Festival, Sheffield Doc Fest, Vancouver International Film Festival, Seattle International Film Festival, Melbourne International Film Festival, Istanbul Independent Film Festival). KEDi is set for theatrical release by Oscilloscope Labs in early 2017, following audience awards and sold out screenings in it's fall 2016 festival run. As Variety notes, KEDi is "a magical and remarkable documentary about the free-roaming feline population of Istanbul... the beautifully spare musical score by Kira Fontana provides the perfect accompaniment for what gradually emerges as a profoundly affecting meditation."
