Julia Barry has been composing, performing, and recording music for 20+ years.

She graduated Sarah Lawrence College with a focus in arts activism and music in 2004, and received her Masters in Interactive Media from Goldsmiths College (University of London) in 2007, focusing on digital and arts activism.

She owns Julia Barry Productions (a studio providing creative and digital services to artists, progressives, educators, and caregivers) and composes music for concert, theater, dance, film, and multi-media projects. She sings with the New York City Master Chorale, which held its 10th Anniversary Concert at Alice Tully Hall in 2016, and recently performed the New York premiere of her piece, "Dwell," in June 2017. In 2016, she was selected for the New Dramatists Composer-Librettists Studio, Art-a-Hack “Sonic Equations” Project, Drop Forge & Tool residency, Columbia/ASCAP Film Scoring Workshop, and the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theater Workshop (continuing into the present). She also was commissioned along with playwright Cori Thomas to create "The Ballad of Ella May," a musical for the Local IBEW Union and Working Theater. Last winter, she scored a web series adaptation of "A Midsummer Night’s Dream," and recently was commissioned to create music for Jami Brandli’s play, "Medusa’s Song." Her current projects include “Habitat: Home,” a collaborative workshop/performance series addressing what ‘home’ means in the present world, and “Papers, Please,” an interactive musical exploring immigration, power, and human responsibility in morally ambiguous times.

In the past, Barry was an invited performer with the Cygnus Ensemble and at benefits such as the American Folk Art Museum Glitter Gala, Jack Hardy Tributes, and the Orphans International Benefit with Peter Yarrow. She recorded and promoted multiple albums of original music through local performances and U.S. tours, and her music was included on compilations and soundtracks of independent and educational films. She was a vetted member of the Meerkat Media Film Collective from 2009-2013, and was selected to participate in NYFA’s Performing Arts Boot Camp in 2015. Other past awards include The REAL Hot 100 (2006), Puffin Foundation Grant (2006), Andrea Klein Willison Prize for Poetry and Women’s Activism (2003), Certificate of Recognition for Musical Excellence from the U.S. Navy (2000), Raymond Del Tufo Award for Music (2000), and the Frank Thompson Award (2000).

Barry is passionate about the power of media and the arts to engender community, creativity, and progressive activism. More information can be found at and
