Janal Bechthold is a composer for film, TV, games, and interactive media, having worked on numerous scores including horror noir feature Art of Obsession, documentary Gods In Shackles, videogame The Rival Books of Aster, and interactive graphic novels, Dystopia 2153 and 80 Degrees North. Her music for television has been broadcast on CBC/SRC-Radio Canada, PBS, CTV, TSN, Discovery, and TV5 international among others!
A multi-instrumentalist with a diverse musical background, Janal studied composition while completing an Honours Bachelor of Music Therapy degree from Wilfrid Laurier University.
“Music Therapy was a natural transition to scoring for film and other media. Studying the interplay between music and psychology enables me to recognize the emotional content of a scene and be able to create music which would support the emotions of the actors, the underlying themes, and guide the audience to a greater experience.”
Janal is the founder of Toronto Women Composers, serves as 2nd VP of the Board of Directors for the Screen Composers Guild of Canada, and holds membership in The Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television and Women in Film and Television (WIFT). She is the recipient of the 2016 Chris Dedrick Music Fund Award for Live Musicians in Media Soundtracks and a participant in the Canadian Music Centre's 2018 EQ Electronic Music Incubator.
